Rabu Hina I: the Cover Art

[edit]

Quoting "Talk:Love Hina": "Has anyone got the cover of volume 1 of the Japanese version? Apart from the fact that I like it better, I think it would be better to illustrate Japanese books with their Japanese covers. Shinobu 07:36, 31 August 2005 (UTC)" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Love_Hina

Script for AFD or PROD?

[edit]

Hello, I'm looking for a script that allows me to quickly add an "AFD" and a "PROD" to articles and quickly add them to the "AFD" page and notify the creator. Currently I have a script that allows me to mark it for "speedy deletion" but I'm looking for a script that adds another panel at the top that can make it easier to mark them as AFD. Can you help?Wikidudeman (talk) 19:20, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed your change to the redirect I set the other day. However, noun particles aren't indigenous to Japanese, as far as I know. Suggesting as much doesn't make sense, and I felt that redirecting to general information about particles (which did, in fact, mention noun particles and explain what a particle is) would be best until someone did have insight on how best to explain noun particles across all languages that have them. Anyways, that was just to let you know of my thinking. Roehl Sybing 05:05, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps, but it remains that the article redirects to an article that doesn't explain what a noun particle is, in what way it differs from just any old particle, et cetera. Stubs attract writers, redirects don't. But if you are knowledgable in this field, why don't you write something about it? Then the redirect won't harm and no stupid stub is needed. And thanks for your explanation. Cordially yours, Shinobu 19:41, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bug

[edit]

See here (diff). Now I did use the formatter (diff) but the search and replace is what did this mess. Please fix thu bug. -- Darkest Hour 21:45, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

Hm. My own formatter (while far from perfect) doesn't seem to cause quite as much mess. I'll take this to the wikiproject to ask wheter this problem still exists and where people will have some familiarity with the code-base. Shinobu 19:50, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I came here from the Formatter talk page, having just checked for the issue reported, then checked the edit history and realised that you had directly copied this section from your talk page. While there's nothing wrong with doing that when relevant, it would be better to have included some sort of notice, especially because it appears User:Darkest Hour's problem was not with the Formatter but with your search & replace tool... Which would be why it was reported to you instead of the Formatter project. :) Cheers. GrimRevenant 09:54, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Replied over there, for reasons detailed there.

Male Y DNA testing

[edit]

I recently sent Dna samples for analysis and as part of a study tracking decendants of an early dutch imegrant to New Amsterdam now New York. My DNA markers matched 4 others in the group with different surnames all with Dutch origins. I am a Garrabrant, Two are Clawsons, ant Two are petersons. We also match 4 individuals in the Netherlands. My e-mail address is M.garrabrant@att.net —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.72.98.88 (talk) 02:17, 23 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Actually Gerbrant is my given name so there is not much chance of us being related, I'm afraid. Good luck on your quest, Shinobu 20:03, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aggregation in COM

[edit]

Thanks for adding the section about Aggregation in COM in Object composition. I found that material very interesting although I found it a bit difficult to be understood for those with no enough knowledge of COM. Could you expand it ? An UML diagram, references, external links, etc., would be helpful. Thanks again. Rjgodoy 05:42, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will try to do what I can, but I'm kind of busy right now, so don't expect an immediate improvement; especially references need to be looked up, although I sort of know where to look for them. Shinobu 09:21, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Image:Simple COM aggregation diagram.svg Simple conceptual diagram. There appears to be a slight font problem, though. I though I had specified "sans", and the text also appears slightly smaller. Shinobu 10:50, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for my late reply. I found the image you left in my talk page, and I included it in the article. As I don't have the software for editing SVG, I put the image in the article. I expect it will attract the attention of someone able to fix it. Regards, and thanks for your contribution. Rjgodoy (talk) 07:37, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't like I'm always so snappy ;-) Thanks for the reply. I hope your right; if not I might have a second go at it. Shinobu (talk) 02:12, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A template you created, Template:Lowercase/Sandbox, has been marked for deletion as a deprecated and orphaned template. If, after 14 days, there has been no objection, the template will be deleted. If you wish to object to its deletion, please list your objection here and feel free to remove the {{deprecated}} tag from the template. If you feel the deletion is appropriate, no further action is necessary. Thanks for your attention. --MZMcBride 04:59, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quoted from there:

  • Template:Lowercase/Sandbox - While the template itself is not useful anymore, it contains part of the edit history of Template:Lowercase. Part of the editing of that template was done in the Sandbox template to avoid disruptig the browsing experience of other Wikipedians, but it is nonetheless part of its editing history. If you delete it, you should merge the edit histories. Shinobu 19:22, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
  • I've delisted this template. --MZMcBride 21:28, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Image:Os9-japanesesupport.png

[edit]

Hi there. I see that you've left a message at Image:Os9-japanesesupport.png. I made that screenshot a long time ago. I didn't know anything about Japanese then, and I still don't, but I felt that it was a shame that what appeared to be a nice IME didn't have a screenshot on Wikipedia. :) The error needs to be fixed. If you could give me the correct text, I will edit the screenshot to have it say that (in a good way, don't worry). Thanks for bringing this to my attention again, I totally forgot about the image! —msikma (user, talk) 21:35, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I unfortunately don't have OS9, but on my disintegrating Windoze box this happens:
If you type the following:
  • korehamizudesu.
When your IME is active and conversion is turned on, it becomes:
  • これはみずです。
Which after hitting the conversion key (spacebar on my PC) becomes:
  • これは水です。
But perhaps it would be nicer to demo a longer sentence, perhaps a famous quotation or something?
Bye, Shinobu 02:12, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for replying with the correct information. And yes, you're right, perhaps it would be better to use something other than a silly tiny phrase. :) Do you have any suggestions? I don't have the operating system installed right now, either, but that's alright. Editing the screenshot is probably illustrative enough. —msikma (user, talk) 13:25, 8 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, for Image:IME demonstratie - Matsuo Bashou - Furu ikeya kawazu tobikomu mizuno oto.png I used a poem, but there other options too. Perhaps Japanese literature can be a source of inspiration, although I should note at this point that many modern texts can unfortunately not be used due to copyright considerations. Yeah, I know it's unfair, but there it is. Shinobu 05:57, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, the image was deleted because there was a free equivalent available. I guess this means it doesn't matter anymore. :) —msikma (user, talk) 16:24, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Custom controls.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Custom controls.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 21:38, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:User-Gerbrant-hidePane.js-demo.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. -- STBotI (talk) 20:04, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

About Peruvian dumplings...

[edit]

I swear, I did not do this Cocaine edit, honestly. Please feel free to check it via user check, if you like. My internet-provider is arcor. --Fromgermany (talk) 20:09, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was looking at this edit, I think. I've dug in the history of the article for a bit, and I found this, which an anon later fixed and then you appear to have accidentally undone the fix. Can happen to the best of us. If you are still convinced you didn't do it, not even by accident, just change your password - life goes on. P.S. User check requires a special privilege and we don't all have it, but I believe this happened by accident, so what's the worry? Just be more careful in the future, after all it isn't like I never mess up. We all do. Shinobu (talk) 18:58, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rename "Norse dwarves" to "Dvergr"

[edit]

Hi,

You renamed Jotun to Jötunn. Excellent.

Would you do the same for Norse dwarves to Dvergr?

Dvergr is already a redirect page, so Im not sure how to change Norse dwarves to it.

--Haldrik (talk) 19:24, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure it should be called Dvergr? As opposed to Dvergar (the plural), what seems to be what the article is currently using as bold-faced term in the lead? Shinobu (talk) 18:34, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

MoS

[edit]

Whatever script you've been using recently to clean up articles to MoS guidelines is breaking {{convert}} templates and possibly others which require a hyphen to be used to denote a negative number for the software to process it. I don't know if this has affected any of your other contributions besides that to WWII. You ought to change or at least check the behaviour of the script though. Note that templates such as this still output MoS-compliant dashes such as the minus sign even though the input needs to be a hyphen. BigBlueFish (talk) 15:43, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot, I totally overlooked that! (I assume you're talking about {{convert|600|mi|km|-2}}.) In principle all edits through that script must be overlooked by a carbon-based AI, but when there are lots of dashes it can happen that it misses something when the script doesn't handle something correctly. I think it's best to add the convert template to the list of exceptions, I'll get around to it immediately. Again, thanks for prodding me. Shinobu (talk) 18:09, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Old Norse Orthography

[edit]

Hello, I noticed your comment asking whether ö was properly transcribed as ǫ or ø. From what we have been taught in my Old Norse class, and according to my written sources, it is ǫ. I will try to fix it wherever I encounter it. Best, VincentValentine29 (talk) 03:17, 28 February 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Okay, thanks. These kind of things can come up when dealing with multiple similar transcription schemes. I've run into similar things when I started getting interested in Japanese. Except that Japanese is still widely spoken and I have a modern Japanese dictionary. Shinobu (talk) 18:02, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Fooding

[edit]

Fooding

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Fooding, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Fooding. I'm fine with that. Shinobu (talk) 16:08, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Just so you know. All the changes you made last night to this article are likely to be reverted. The article is under intense review and the normal way changes are made to it is not how you did it but through prolonged discussion FIRST to reach consensus BEFORE any changes are made. Peter morrell 05:53, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see what's so controversial about my edits to that article, or why anyone would want to revert them. Please remember to stick to Wikipedia policy, particularly WP:V, WP:N and WP:NPOV, and have a nice time editing. Maybe I'll pop by again one of these days to see if there's more that needs fixing. I happened to reference this page [1] which was last edited by you and I would like to share two things. IPA chart 2005

[edit]

I say on the talk page of Image:IPA chart 2005.png that I'll be happy to generate an SVG file if someone tells me how, but there hasn't been any response. The only way I can think of is to first convert the Word doc to PDF, and then convert the PDF to SVG, but much of the text gets corrupted. Some of the fonts get lost along the way. Is there an extension that would allow me to convert directly? kwami (talk) 21:44, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry I didn't check the talk page, I was just routinely tagging. Anyway, without seeing what went wrong for myself it's hard to say what exactly goes wrong, but I gather PDF is okay, right? So maybe there's something wonky with the program you use to convert the PDF to SVG. There are a few things you could do. You could try a different program to do the conversion, a quick websearch yields the names Pstoedit (commandline utility), Gsview (a PDF/PostScript viewer that calls Pstoedit), and Inkscape (but not yet in the main branch). Another option would be to grep the file for the font names or to try to select the text objects and see what kind of font names the converter made up, so you can correct what went wrong. It's of course also possible that the SVG is okay but that the drawing program doesn't load it correctly. If all else fails, I can recreate the file as an SVG using Inkscape, but that will involve drawing the table etc., so in that case I will take my sweet time. Oh, and thanks in advance for your trouble. Bye, Shinobu (talk) 02:30, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re: Akai Ito

[edit]

Upon checking the Japanese Wikipedia page and official website for Akai Ito, I realized I was in error. The game was released for the Playstation 2, but not for the PC. There is a demo available for download and play on a PC, but the full game definitely does not exist for the PC. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, and I will correct it immediately. Leonardo's science etc

[edit]

I just reverted your edits and I am leaving this message to explain why. In many articles quotations conatin information that is being used by the editor to enlarge upon the subject eg:

Vasari says of Leonardo "not only was he esteemed during his lifetime, but his reputation endured....."

This is a very different sort of quotation to:

Shakespeare wrote:

"To be, or not to be. That is the question.

Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune......"

In the article about Leonardo's science and inventions, the quotations which have been set apart as cquotes fall into the "to be or not to be" category, not into the "Leonardo was esteemed during his lifetime" category. They are quotations from Leonardo's own journals that indicate how his mind was working. They are not part of the informative discussion of his achievements. Once you remove the cquote marks, the reader the reader then has to make sense of the several disjointed passages which don't flow immediately from the sentence above, or the sentence below.

When you make changes like this, you need to read thoroughly what the article is saying and understand why that format has been chosen. If you don't do this, then later editors tend to presume that what you have done is fine, because it complies with some reasonable standard. The effect, however, is very destructive to the article, however untintentionally so, because it makes nonsense out of clarity. Amandajm (talk) 09:19, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am reverting your reversion. I had read the article before I did my edit, and these are not pullquotes. Also, the cquote template generates TABLE tags instead of BLOCKQUOTE tags, which is semantically wrong. Shinobu (talk) 21:00, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
These quotes are indeed "pull quotes". However they are not used in the journalistic sense that generally entails pulling the most sensational few lines out of the article to excite interest. In this instance they are quotations pulled from the writer's journals. The actual statements made in the pull quotes are not very closely linked to the general text, because they are sampled rather than discussed. That is why they were in cquotes. I know exactly how they were used, and the reason why they were in cquotes, because I wrote the article. In this particular instance, it is the correct use of this formatting. Amandajm (talk) 10:42, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey again Gerbrandt :) How's life treating you? Judging from your page you've grown a lot as a person! Would be nice to hear about how you're doing again, spare me a line, will you? :) Nerusai (talk) 18:20, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Romanian keyboard layout

[edit]

Hi,

This image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Romanian_keyboard_layout_(Romania_&_Moldova)_-_text_as_paths.svg is wrong. Nobody uses that keyboard layout. Where did you hear that from?

Have a look at http://www.secarica.ro/kbdro_help_romanian_standard_ro.pdf and http://www.secarica.ro/kbdro_help_romanian_programmers_ro.pdf for details. Briefly there are two layouts: romanian (standard) and romanian programmer. The last one is identical to the US layout with added letters on 3rd and 4th layer. The first one is almost identical with US layout but the Romanian letters are added around the Enter key, like in your picture.

Best regards,

Ionel

Colors used in Heraldry

[edit]

I'm in the process of restoring "The Heraldry of the Johnstons" by G. Harvey Johnston. I've started to work on the first of the eight, color plates and would like to know if there is an accepted formula that one can use in Photoshop for blue, red, and gold, ie: the numerical values for Red, Green and Blue or C, M, Y, K?

I would like to do as accurate a restoration job as possible.

User script listings cleanup project

[edit]

I'm leaving this message for known script authors and recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts.

This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

[edit]

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:38, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:WinDiff demonstration.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:WinDiff demonstration.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. ⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Custom controls.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:24, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dithering program

[edit]

Hi,

In https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Gerbrant/Dithering_algorithms you mentioned that you used a "homebrew program" to generate those images. Do you happen to still have the source available? I al really curious about the exact matrices used by each method as it is difficult to find info on some.
